The Commerce Department's refusal to address the issue of undervalued currency in two pending trade cases reinforces the urgent need for Congress to strengthen U.S. trade law. The Chinese government has undervalued its currency by up to 40 percent for more than a decade to support its export strategy. The impact on American workers, communities and manufacturers has been devastating. Ending this unfair trade practice and ensuring that currency values reflect market forces would result in the creation of one million U.S. jobs. It is time to take action to restore fair currency values. HR 2378, introduced by Representatives Ryan and Murphy, and S. 3134, introduced by Senators Schumer and Stabenow, are the right steps at the right time. We urge Congress to act immediately when recess ends.
