Committee (Chairman Baucus, D-Mont.) will hold a hearing titled "Extenders
and Tax Reform: Seeking Long-Term Solutions." The session will focus on
efforts to find a long-term solution for the tax provisions that require
frequent renewal, commonly called "tax extenders." Many provisions in
the tax code expire annually or biannually, but usually Congress passes
legislation that extends them. There are more than 50 of these tax extenders,
and the frequent threat of expiration causes uncertainty among taxpaying
businesses, families and individuals. In addition the hearing will evaluate
what role tax extenders should play in the tax overhaul reform process aimed at
broadening the tax base, lowering rates and making the tax code more fair,
efficient and simple.
